Pimp your noodles

by Mark Chapman

Invented in 1958 in Japan by Momofuku Ando of the Nissin Foods company to provide food for the people during the time of economic uncertainty following the Second World War, today instant noodles are available worldwide. The easy way to prepare and the two-minute cooking time with boiling water made them literally an instant success.

Make more out of a pack of instant noodles and pimp them with whatever tickles your tastebuds.

Today there are many different brands on the market. Maggi, for example, owned by Nestle, is dominating a few markets. Some of my friends in India refer to the name Maggi as a synonym for instant noodles. Once an expensive good, they are now a cheap meal with large varieties of flavours customised for each market.

An amazing 100 billion servings of instant noodles are eaten worldwide every year, China consuming 40 billion alone, followed by Indonesia with 12 billion.

Because traditional noodle bowls were not custom in non-Asian countries, Nissin Foods introduced Cup Noodles in 1971.

Sometimes when I come home after work, I don’t feel like cooking, and I am then happy to open a pack of instant noodles and prepare them. Yet there is always some vegetables, meat or fish in my kitchen to jazz up the dish. A poached egg on top of the steaming hot ramen is very delicious too. I prefer to buy the unflavoured or least flavoured packets to individualise the taste with my spice’s fresh chillies and soy sauce.

Give it a try.
