Diversity is healthy – a personal message

by Mark Chapman

Diversity in all areas of life is not only enriching and colourful but vital. Just think about the large-scale monocultures in agriculture and how they kill biodiversity. Our massive industrialized use of natural resources is damaging our environment. The same applies to racism, bigotry, misogyny and homophobia/transphobia. They make our lives worse – only equality and respect for diverse ethnicities and genders enable peaceful and meaningful coexistence.

For most of my adult life I've been campaigning for equality and equal rights for all, especially the LGBTI + community. In my opinion, a healthy society is a diverse one – diverse in people, culture and democratic politics – where there is enough space for everyone to be and express themselves, contributing to a colourful social structure.

We all agree that a balanced diet is healthier for us than eating the same monotonous foods over and over when we can afford it. Many of our eating habits cause our body diseases.
My curiosity about foods and recipes has led me to a wide variety of dishes from different cultures and regions of the world.

Food can be a starting point for cultural exchange and understanding. Exchanging recipes with my friends on social media is fun. I learnt a lot about other cultures from cooking their food, and it has enriched me tremendously.

That is why diversity is healthy.
